Hafertepe Jr. Hassled by Bad Luck Throughout Chili Bowl Nationals

TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 20, 2016) – Luck wasn’t on Sam Hafertepe Jr.’s side during last week’s 30thannual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire.

Preliminary action at Tulsa Expo Raceway began last Tuesday as Hafertepe Jr. advanced from fourth to third place during a heat race and from eighth to sixth place in a qualifier, which lined him up on the inside of the third row for a B Main.

“In our heat race and qualifier we struggled with the setup quite a bit,” he said. “In the B Main we seemed to figure things out and got a lot better. It was more dialed in.”

Hafertepe Jr. picked up the position he needed to place fourth, which garnered a transfer into the back row of the 25-lap feature.

“We started 23rd and we got up to 11th, but we had a crank trigger go out on us,” he said. “Once that caution came out we noticed we were running on two cylinders instead of four.”

Hafertepe Jr. was forced to pull off the track with the mechanical problem when a caution came out in the closing laps. That relegated him to the eighth starting position during a D Main on Saturday.

“We ended up blowing the engine up and that ended our whole weekend,” he said. “Right on the start going into turn one we ended up throwing a rod out of the engine. It wasn’t what we planned on, but that’s part of racing sometimes.”
